It's pretty disgusting but I have to say not too surprising given human nature and history. Doubt of anything can be established if it has no direct, perceivable bearing upon people's daily lives--and is attacked with religious zeal. Compounding this, the disconnect between the increased specialization of the work of scientists and the vast majority of the public has only grown since the end of the Cold War--the last time when science education was considered a priority. More work needs to be done by those who care to show the interconnectedness of life and habitat as it branches and adapts in the incredible ways that are on display at the EBV. I could see even a blurb or graphic on the terrarium with a map showing the native habitat of each critter and its nearest relative--and perhaps an ancestor it evolved from--would do wonders to pique the interest of people. Perhaps it may not 'convert' many, but it might arm some a bit better to deal with the onslaught of fundamentalism.
